Marion Huse (American 1896-1967) oil on canvas ''Autumn Evening '' 1943 signed and dated in LR depiction of a late 19th /early 20th century city suburb local residents and horse drawn carts litter the street while electricity lines and a skyscraper loom over them slight craquelure eraser-sized damage to far right surface grime 24'' h. x 30'' w. [Marion Huse (1896-1967) was founder operator and head instructor of a successful art school in Springfield Massachusetts from 1925-1940 and a regional director of the state's W.P.A. Federal Art Project. Huse broke many barriers and achieved a degree of professional success unusual for a woman of her day. As a painter her works were exhibited and honored throughout New England and in other areas of the United States. In the early 1930's Huse acquired a country studio in the small Vermont village of Pownal nestled in the Green Mountain foothills just over the Massachusetts border from Williamstown. Marion Huse broadened her investigation of the American Scene after an excursion to New Mexico in the fall of 1937. In 1944 the artist married Robert Barstow and moved to Albany New York where they lived for several years. In late 1946 Huse left Albany to join her husband stationed with the Army Medical Corps in Europe immediately following World War II. They travelled throughout the country side of the Low Countries and northern France so that Huse could paint and sketch. While abroad Huse became more directly influenced by European Modernism in general and School of Paris painting in particular. During the 1940's Marion Huse became a pioneer in the exploration of the newly established graphic art medium of silk screen printing as serigraphy. During the summer of 1947 Huse began to experiment considerably with monotype. Many of Huse's most significant late works are characterized by increasingly abstract compositions and a more vigorously expressionistic manner of presentation. Around 1960 Huse further diversified her art through an exploration of medium of collage.][Sold to benefit a New England Museum/Institution copy of Marion Huse An Artist's Evolution catalog give to successful bider]
